Yahweh said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen? If you do well, won't it be lifted up? If you don't do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.' Genesis 4:6 WEB
Cain got angry because the Lord had no regard for the offering that he had brought, but did to Abel's offering. After Cain became very angry, the Lord told him that sin was crouching at his door and desired to have him, but that he must rule over it.
Cain did not manage to rule over the sin in his life, and right after this, murdered his brother Abel while out in the field. What was hidden in his heart, eventually came to pass. As to why God accepted Abel's offering but not Cain's, it was clearly the condition of his heart and not his gift. These two scriptures give us insight:
'The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination: How much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind!' (Proverbs 21:27).
'For this is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; unlike Cain, who was of the evil one, and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous' (1 John 3:11'12).
Sin is still crouching at the door of our heart today. It only needs a slight crack and it will be inside sitting on the couch. Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:26, 'In your anger do not sin', and then, 'do not give the devil a foothold', right after it. When you become 'very' angry, you will let sin in the door, just as Cain did.
Keep your anger in check and do not let it become your master. Instead you must master it, for once sin is running loose in the house, it is hard to get out.
Prayer: Father, I pray that You help me control my emotions and make me stable. Let me not be swept up in fear or anger. Help me to master sin in my life and live out all that You have for me, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.
