The hustle and bustle of life can get a bit overwhelming at times. There are often so many things pulling at our attention, yet there is something that you need to make time for.
(Revelation 3:20 NKJV) "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."
At the moment, Jesus stands outside and knocks. He will not force His way into your life. If you hear His call, make time for Him, and open your door, then He will come in. In this verse, the word used for dining is the day's main meal. It's not a quick snack but a leisurely time of fellowship together. We are free to invite Jesus into our life today.
Yet, there is a day coming when Jesus will stop knocking at our door, and we will be knocking at His. At that point, those who are not ready remain outside.
(Luke 13:22–27 NKJV) "And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?" And He said to them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able."
When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open for us,' and He will answer and say to you, 'I do not know you, where you are from,' then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.' But He will say, 'I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.'"
Today is the day of salvation, for when the Lord shuts the door, there will be no opening it. Jesus told His disciples what His return would be like:
(Luke 17:26–27 NKJV) "And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all."
(Luke 17:28–30 NKJV) "Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed."
Sadly the people in Noah's and Lot's days were not lost because of their sins, but because of indifference. Just like us, those people were busy with life, building, planting, buying, selling, cooking, and raising families. When they got up that morning, they had no idea it was for the last time. When the Lord shuts the door, there will be no more time to get ready. The highway to hell is paved with good intentions, and intending to do something your whole life just means you haven't done it yet. You may intend to do it tomorrow, but what if tomorrow never comes? It didn't happen for them.
(Luke 12:40 NKJV) "Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."
Remember the parable of the ten bridesmaids who were waiting on the Master to return? The five who were ready went with Him to the wedding, while the others were locked outside the door:
(Matthew 25:10–13 NKJV) And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. "Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!' But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.' "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming."
Once again, we see someone caught off guard by an event they knew was coming. They just hadn't taken the time to prepare for it yet. Maybe they planned to do it tomorrow. Don't let that be you.
You can pray this with me if you like:
Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me of my sin. I hear You knocking. Please come in. Give me a clear vision of what I can do for You. Help me see people through Your eyes. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
